What happened when the ‘planner’ gave up control and hired a travel planner?

A little about this trip

We have been on the road for 3 weeks now and it has been nothing short of a blast. Re-entry will be a bit of a bummer, but I’m thankful that we have had the trip that we have had.

I mentioned previously that this is our COVID revenge trip. We were supposed to do this trip in 2020 and for obvious reasons, it didn’t happen. I had planned the bulk of that trip on my own.

I consider myself a pretty good planner and pride myself on doing all of the research on where we visit, as does Marc. Well, he focuses on specific areas like baked goods and where he can get a proper Americano.

For this trip, I actually found a company that specialized in Norway called UpNorway. The itinerary didn’t vary that much from what I had initially planned.

But I did give up control of the itinerary and decided to trust the experts and the process.

But the caliber of the places we stayed at as well as slight adjustments to where we stayed in a particular area made all of the difference.

In short, having some expert guides suss out what our needs were and translating those into a journey that we could get excited about had a huge impact on our experience.

Technology has helped our lives in many ways, with travel being one of them. The feeling of being empowered to do things on your own without a broker in between is pretty great.

That said, when you are looking for something bespoke it may make sense to engage an expert. Why?

  • They know what is on the other side of the marketplace - in this case, places to stay, restaurants to eat at, things to do, etc. that you might not be aware of.

  • They understand what you’re looking for and what defines success for you in the experience. For this trip for us, it was loads of hiking, doing something unique at midnight given the daylight situation, and eating some great food.

  • The free time you would spend planning and booking all of the accommodations, restaurants and activities can be better spent on activities that need more of your energy.

  • They can also tell you things you might NOT be taking into account when you believe you have a great plan. For example, driving 60 miles on an archipelago such as the Lofoten Islands takes much longer than driving on a larger highway.

  • Their business is 100% predicated on you having an excellent experience. They want you to tell your family and friends that you had a fantastic time on your vacation.
